Patio Cover Installation

About this project

Elbaz Construction built this attached patio cover along the full rear elevation of a single-story South Florida home, framing it in square black aluminum posts and beams that carry a run of white insulated roof panels overhead. The black structure reads sharply against the home's white stucco walls and black-framed windows, giving the addition the crisp two-tone look the project takes its name from. Recessed can lights are set into the panel ceiling, and the cover extends far enough off the house to shade a full-depth outdoor living area rather than just a narrow walkway.

The cover ties together two different surfaces on either end of the run. Over a newly poured, broom-finished concrete slab, the structure is left open with clean sightlines to the yard, save for a black louvered slat wall at one corner that adds privacy and a wind break without closing the space in. Where the cover continues over the home's existing bluestone paver patio, bordered in white river rock, it's outfitted for everyday use: two matte black ceiling fans keep air moving under the panels, and a black cup-style rain chain replaces a standard downspout at the corner post, channeling roof runoff down in view rather than hiding it in a pipe.

Furnished with a black wicker sectional just off the home's rear sliding door, the paver end of the patio functions as a finished outdoor living room, while the slab end reads as flexible covered space. Together the two sections give the homeowners shade and weather protection across the entire back of the house, a straightforward addition that adds usable square footage to the property without altering the home's existing footprint.
