Kitchen Cabinet Refacing & Replacement

Refacing and replacement solve the same visible problem — dated or worn cabinets — but they’re fundamentally different projects. Refacing keeps the existing cabinet boxes in place and covers the face frames and box ends with new veneer or laminate, then swaps doors, drawer fronts, and hardware. Replacement removes everything down to the wall and installs entirely new boxes. The right choice comes down to one question: are the boxes underneath actually sound?

South Florida’s humidity makes that question more than cosmetic. A large share of the region’s builder-grade kitchens from the 1980s through the early 2000s were built with particleboard boxes, which don’t tolerate years of humidity exposure well — and it’s often that box material, not the door style, that determines whether refacing is even an option.

Elbaz Construction inspects what’s behind the doors before recommending either path, because refacing cabinets with compromised boxes just delays a replacement that’s coming anyway.

Assessing what's underneath.

Before recommending reface or replace, we check the boxes for swelling or delamination at corners and toe-kick areas where water tends to pool, confirm the boxes are still square and securely fastened to the wall, and identify whether the box material is plywood (which holds up) or particleboard/low-grade MDF (which absorbs moisture, swells at the seams, and eventually loses structural integrity). This assessment, not the age of the doors, is what actually determines eligibility for refacing.

What refacing actually involves.

Refacing applies new veneer — real wood veneer, rigid thermofoil, or high-pressure laminate — to the face frames and exposed box ends, then replaces all doors, drawer fronts, and hardware. The layout stays exactly as it is; refacing changes the look of the kitchen without touching the footprint, plumbing, or electrical.

What replacement solves that refacing can't.

Replacement is the answer when boxes are water-damaged, built from particleboard that’s already swelling, or when the homeowner wants a layout change, deeper drawers, or storage features (pull-out shelving, appliance garages, waste bins) that can’t be retrofitted into an old box. It’s also the point to upgrade box material itself — swapping particleboard construction for plywood permanently solves the humidity problem refacing can only mask.

Cost and timeline tradeoff.

Refacing runs roughly half the cost of full replacement and takes days rather than weeks, since there’s no demolition, no new boxes to build or install, and no risk of exposing wall or floor issues behind the old cabinetry. That makes it an efficient choice when the layout works and the boxes are sound — but it’s not a shortcut around boxes that are already failing.

What Drives The Cost

  • Box condition and prep needed — Boxes needing repair before refacing, or full demolition for replacement, both add labor.
  • Veneer or cabinet material choice — RTF, wood veneer, and laminate carry different price points; box material (plywood vs. particleboard) is a major cost factor in replacement.
  • Number of openings — Total count of doors and drawer fronts is the primary driver of material and labor cost in refacing specifically.
  • Hardware upgrades — Soft-close hinges/slides and new pulls add incremental cost across either path.
  • Layout changes — Only relevant to replacement, but any footprint change adds plumbing/electrical coordination cost.
  • Plumbing or electrical rework — Only triggered by replacement if the new layout relocates fixtures or outlets.

Inspect existing boxes for moisture damage, material type, squareness, and structural soundness.

Recommend a path based on box condition, then select veneer/door style (refacing) or full cabinet line and box construction (replacement).

Veneer, doors, and hardware are fabricated for refacing; new boxes, doors, and drawer components are built or ordered for replacement.

Remove old doors, drawers, and hardware for refacing; fully demo old cabinetry down to the wall for replacement.

Install new veneer, doors, and hardware, or install and level new boxes, then set doors, drawers, and hardware.

Kitchen Cabinet Refacing & Replacement Questions, Answered

1 How do I know if my cabinets can be refaced or if I need to replace them?

It comes down to the boxes, not the doors. If the boxes are plywood, square, securely attached, and free of water damage, refacing works well. If you see swelling, soft spots, or separation at the corners — especially near the sink or dishwasher — the boxes are likely already compromised and replacement is the better long-term answer.

2 Is refacing actually going to look as good as new cabinets?

Done well, yes — refacing changes every visible surface (doors, drawer fronts, face frames, exposed sides, hardware), so the finished look is essentially indistinguishable from new cabinetry. What it doesn't change is the interior of the boxes or the layout.

3 How much cheaper is refacing than full replacement?

Refacing typically runs about half the cost of full replacement for a comparable kitchen, largely because there's no demolition, no new box construction, and significantly less labor and disposal involved.

4 My cabinet boxes feel swollen near the sink — what does that mean?

That's a strong sign the boxes are particleboard or low-grade material that's absorbed water over time, which doesn't reverse. Swelling near plumbing fixtures usually means the box material has already started to lose structural integrity, which points toward replacement rather than refacing.

5 Can you reface cabinets and also change the layout a little?

Minor changes — like adding a new pull-out or swapping hardware style — can sometimes be worked into a refacing project, but any real layout change (moving a run of cabinets, changing the island footprint) requires new boxes, which means replacement.

6 How long does cabinet refacing take compared to replacement?

Refacing typically takes a few days to about a week; replacement, since it involves full demolition and new cabinet installation, generally runs one to two weeks or longer depending on whether the layout is changing.

7 What's the difference between laminate refacing and real wood veneer?

High-pressure laminate and rigid thermofoil are more affordable and highly consistent in appearance, while real wood veneer gives genuine wood grain and can be stained to match existing millwork — it costs more but reads as authentic wood rather than a resurfaced finish.

8 Will refaced cabinets hold up in Florida's humidity as well as new ones?

The veneer and finish resist humidity well, but refacing only performs as well as the boxes underneath it — which is exactly why we check box material and condition before recommending refacing in the first place.
