Cabinetry is
the only finish
you touch every day.

Everything else in a kitchen is looked at. Cabinetry is handled — opened, leaned on, loaded, closed — thousands of times a year. That is why the parts you never see decide how it ages: the box material, the joinery, the drawer runner, the hinge and the way the whole run is fixed to a wall that is never quite straight.

A door front is a finish decision and it takes an afternoon to change your mind about. A cabinet box is a construction decision and it is with the house for twenty years. We separate the two deliberately: specify the carcass, the hardware and the fixing method first, then choose the door style, the paint or stain and the pull. That order is why a kitchen still closes quietly a decade later.

We handle the survey, the design and elevations, the specification, the fabrication schedule, the delivery sequence and the installation — including the scribing, filler and panel work that makes a manufactured product look like it was built into the room.

No wall is plumb, no floor is level and no ceiling is flat. Cabinetry is built square, so the difference is taken up in scribe, filler and shim — planned, not improvised on the day.

Painted perimeter with a stained island is the most common two-tone in South Florida kitchens. It works when the two finishes never meet on the same plane.

Soft-close is not one product. Runner load rating, full versus partial extension and hinge adjustability are what separate a drawer that still tracks true from one that drops.

Division 12 — Cabinet components

What a cabinet is actually made of

Six parts, listed from the ones you never see to the ones you touch. The first three decide how long it lasts; the last three decide how it looks.

The carcass

Everything else is fixed to this.

The box: sides, deck, back and stretchers. Plywood carcasses hold a screw and a hinge plate better than particle board and tolerate a leak far better, which matters under a sink in a humid climate. Back panel thickness is the quiet detail — a thin back means the run is only as straight as the wall behind it.

Suitability. Plywood under every wet location; either material elsewhere on budget.

Maintenance. Nothing, if it stays dry. Check under-sink boxes annually for the early staining that means a supply or waste fitting is weeping.

Drawer boxes & runners

The part that does the most work.

Dovetailed hardwood boxes on full-extension undermount runners are the standard worth paying for: the drawer comes all the way out, so the back of it is usable, and the runner carries the load instead of the box sides. Load rating matters most in pan drawers and cutlery banks.

Hinges & fixings

Where alignment is won or lost.

A six-way adjustable concealed hinge is what lets an installer bring a run of doors into a straight line after the boxes are fixed to an imperfect wall. Cabinets are hung off a level rail or through the back into studs and blocking — never into drywall alone.

Door & drawer fronts

The style decision everyone actually makes.

Shaker, slab, raised panel or glass-front. The style sets the reveal — the gap around each front — and the reveal is what the eye reads as quality. Consistency matters more than the number: 3mm everywhere looks deliberate, 3mm in places and 5mm elsewhere looks like a mistake.

How the wood is protected and how it reads.

A sprayed catalysed finish on a painted door is harder than a brushed one and shows fewer marks at the pull. Stain keeps the grain visible, which hides handling far better than a pale paint — one reason a dark stained island beside a painted perimeter is such a durable combination.

Scribe, filler & panels

What makes a fitted kitchen look fitted.

Scribe closes the gap against an out-of-plumb wall. Filler absorbs the tolerance where a run meets a return. Finished end panels, toe-kick and crown or a flat top rail close the run to the room. Skipping these is the single clearest visual difference between installed and fitted.

Project record 01 — material analysis

Two finishes, one set of rules

This kitchen runs a painted perimeter against a dark stained island and backs both with a single strong colour. It works because the three decisions underneath it are consistent, not because the palette is clever.

Perimeter

Painted shaker, kept quiet

The wall cabinetry is a warm white shaker with a narrow rail, carried to the ceiling on the tall runs so there is no dust shelf above the doors. Keeping the perimeter pale is what allows the backsplash to be as saturated as it is without the room closing in.

Island

Stained shaker, doing the work

The island and the run beside the range are a dark stained timber with the grain left visible. That is the surface that gets handled most, and stain hides fingerprints and knocks in a way a pale paint cannot. It also anchors the room visually so the pale perimeter does not float.

Worktops

One quartz across both finishes

A single veined quartz is used on the perimeter and the island. Running one worktop across two cabinet finishes is what stops a two-tone kitchen reading as two kitchens: the horizontal plane is continuous even though the vertical one changes.

Backsplash

Herringbone, full height behind the range

A small-format glazed tile in a herringbone set, carried full height behind the range and to the underside of the uppers elsewhere. The direction change is what makes a plain colour interesting; stopping it at the upper line is what keeps it from overwhelming the room.

The detail that ties it together is the reveal. The same gap is held around every front, on both finishes, across the whole kitchen — including where a painted door sits next to a stained one. That is set at installation, and it is the difference between cabinetry that was fitted and cabinetry that was merely delivered.

The default for a reason: a simple frame and flat panel that suits both painted and stained finishes and dates slowly.

These frames are a different project from the two-tone kitchen above and are presented separately for that reason. Nothing is blended between the two, and no frame is a before-and-after.

Division 01 — quality control

Ten stages, from survey to the last adjustment

Cabinetry is manufactured square and installed into a room that is not. Each stage below names the check that closes it and the defect it exists to prevent.

Survey & existing conditions

Measure the room at three heights, check walls for plumb and floors for level, and record every service, vent and obstruction inside the cabinet zone.

Quality check

Two independent measurements of every run before anything is ordered.

A run ordered 15mm too long, which cannot be fixed on site.

Layout & storage design

Set out door and drawer widths from the fixed points — window centre, range, sink — and decide what goes in every cabinet before the sizes are frozen.

Division 01 — coordination

Permits, trades and the order things must happen in

Cabinetry itself is rarely the permitted element. What surrounds it usually is, and the sequence is what protects your programme.

When a permit is normally involved

Moving or adding plumbing for a sink, dishwasher or pot filler.
New or altered electrical circuits, outlets or dedicated appliance supplies.
New or relocated extraction ducted to outside.
Removing or altering a wall, which brings structural review with it.
Work in a condominium, where the association's approval process runs in parallel with the municipal one.

When it usually is not

A like-for-like replacement of cabinetry with no change to services.
New fronts or a refacing that leaves the boxes and the services alone.
Worktop replacement using the existing sink and hob positions.
Internal storage changes inside existing cabinets.
Painting or refinishing existing cabinetry in place.

Condominium approval

In a condo, the association's rules on working hours, lift protection, waste removal and floor covering usually bind the programme harder than the building department does. Start that approval first — it is the one nobody can expedite.

Trade sequence

Electrical and plumbing rough-in, then wall and floor finishes, then cabinetry, then worktop template, then final connections. Cabinetry installed before the floor is down leaves a toe-kick that cannot be closed properly.

Template timing

A stone worktop is templated from installed cabinetry and then fabricated. That gap is real and unavoidable, and it is the single most common surprise in a kitchen programme.

Appliance lead times

Cabinetry is built around specific appliance dimensions. A substituted model after fabrication is a cabinetry change, not an appliance change.

Humidity and acclimatisation

Timber fronts should sit in the conditioned room before installation. Fitting cabinetry into a house that is not yet running its air conditioning invites movement after handover.

Protection of finished work

Cabinetry usually arrives before painting and flooring are fully finished. Protection is a scheduled task with a named owner, not an afterthought.

Inspections

Where services were altered, the rough-in inspection happens before cabinetry closes the wall. Cabinetry fitted over an uninspected rough-in has to come off.

Handover documentation

Finish codes, hardware model numbers, appliance manuals and the cabinetry schedule belong together in one file — that is what makes a future repair or extension straightforward.

Timelines are not promised here. Fabrication and stone lead times move with supply, and association approvals move at their own pace. We give a written programme for your specific scope, with the template gap shown explicitly, before you commit.

Division 01 — substitutions

Three cabinetry decisions worth understanding

Each has a real trade-off in both directions. Nothing below is presented as the obvious answer.

Inside a base cabinet

The parts that decide how long a kitchen lasts are the ones sealed inside the box. This section draws them, because no photograph of a finished kitchen can show you what you are actually buying.

Plywood or furniture board. Everything else is fixed to this, so its thickness sets how well a screw holds.

The rail transfers the load into studs or blocking; a thin back alone will not hold a loaded wall cabinet.

Dovetailed hardwood on a full-extension undermount runner. The runner carries the load, not the box side.

Division 01 — allowances

What moves the number, and how it ages

No fixed prices are published here — cabinetry is priced per linear foot of a specific design in a specific room, and a figure on a web page would be misleading. These are the variables that actually move it.

What moves the number

Linear footage and cabinet count

The base measure. Two kitchens of the same floor area can differ substantially in run length.

Custom versus semi-custom

The single largest lever, and it widens with every non-standard dimension.

Carcass material

Plywood throughout costs more than furniture board and is the upgrade with the longest payback in a humid climate.

Door style and finish

Raised panel costs more than shaker, which costs more than slab. A sprayed painted finish generally costs more than a stain.

Drawer count

Drawer banks cost more than doors with shelves. This is where most of the daily benefit is bought.

Hardware specification

Runners, hinges and pulls, multiplied by a lot of openings. Soft-close everywhere is a real line item.

Internal fit-out

Larder pull-outs, cutlery dividers, waste systems and interior lighting are priced per unit and add up quickly.

Site conditions

Out-of-plumb walls, uneven floors, awkward services and condo access restrictions all add installation time.

What happens after issue

Expected life

A well-built plywood carcass on quality hardware outlives the finish and often the appliances. Doors and worktops usually date before the boxes wear out.

What wears first

Hardware at the most-used drawers, and the finish immediately around the pulls. Both are repairable without replacing cabinetry.

Refacing later

If the boxes are sound and the layout still works, new fronts and hardware transform a kitchen at a fraction of a full replacement.

Everyday care

Wipe spills promptly, especially at the toe-kick and under the sink; avoid abrasive cleaners on a sprayed finish; re-tighten pulls annually.

The kitchen file

Finish codes, hardware models, appliance manuals and the cabinetry schedule kept together are what make a future repair, extension or sale straightforward.

Reveal consistency

Watch the gap around the fronts as the view moves along the run. A constant reveal across two different finishes is an installation result, not a manufacturing one.

One worktop, two cabinet finishes

The continuous horizontal plane is what stops a two-tone kitchen reading as two separate kitchens.

Drawers where the work happens

Banks of drawers in the prep and cooking zone, doors reserved for the sink base and tall storage.

Finished ends and toe-kick

The run is closed to the room on every exposed side — the difference between fitted and merely installed.

Questions we are actually asked

The programme is driven by fabrication and, if you are having stone worktops, by the template-to-fit gap that can only start once the cabinetry is installed. We give you a written programme for your specific scope with that gap shown explicitly rather than quoting a general figure, because appliance and stone lead times move with supply.

Semi-custom is manufactured in fixed width increments and adapted to your room with filler panels; custom is built to the exact dimensions of the space. In a newer house with regular geometry semi-custom often fits beautifully and costs less. In an older South Florida house or a condo, where almost nothing is square, custom usually produces a noticeably better fit for the money.

Furniture board is perfectly serviceable in dry locations. Plywood holds screws and hinge plates better and tolerates a leak far better, which is why we recommend it under every sink and dishwasher at minimum. Many clients specify plywood throughout for the humidity tolerance.

If the boxes are structurally sound, the layout still works for you and the carcasses are not water damaged, refacing with new fronts and hardware is a genuine option and costs a fraction of full replacement. We will tell you honestly after a survey whether your boxes are worth keeping.

Cabinetry itself usually does not require a permit. Moving plumbing, adding or altering electrical circuits, new ducted extraction or removing a wall generally do. In a condominium the association's own approval process runs alongside the municipal one and is often the longer of the two.

Cabinetry is adjusted empty and then you load it. Weight settles a run slightly and timber fronts move a little as they acclimatise to the conditioned room. A second adjustment visit after the kitchen has been used is part of how we work rather than a sign that something is wrong.

Salt air is hard on unprotected finishes. Stainless and good quality plated finishes perform well; unlacquered brass and other living finishes will change with handling and coastal air, which some clients want and others do not. It is worth deciding that deliberately rather than discovering it.

Wipe spills promptly, use a damp cloth rather than an abrasive or solvent cleaner, and expect the area immediately around the pulls to show handling first. Keep the finish code from your handover file so touch-ups match, and re-tighten pull fixings about once a year.

Qualifications

Why bring the cabinetry to us

Licensed general contractor
