What is the difference between face-frame and frameless cabinets?

Face-frame boxes have a solid wood rim across the front, and doors sit over or inside it. Frameless boxes have no rim, so the doors cover the whole box and drawers can be slightly wider. Frameless suits a clean modern look; face-frame suits traditional styles and is more forgiving on uneven walls. We recommend one based on the room.

How do you build cabinets for walls that are not square?

We measure the room, including the out-of-plumb walls and uneven floor, and draw the cabinets with scribe strips and filler panels so the run still looks straight. At installation, the cabinets are shimmed level, then trimmed to follow the wall. Skipping this step is why some kitchens show gaps along the ceiling and side walls.

Can new cabinets match built-ins in another room?

Yes. We can take the same door profile, paint or stain, and hardware into a living room, den or entry, so the house reads as one design. The photo project above includes navy built-ins in the living area. Matching works best when the finishes are specified once and approved on a sample board.

Do I need to choose panel-ready appliances first?

Yes, before the drawings are final. Panel-ready fridges and dishwashers need exact dimensions, hinge sides and ventilation clearances, and the cabinetry is built around them. If the model changes after fabrication starts, the panels, openings or trim may need rework. We ask for the model numbers at the drawing stage.

Can lighting be built into the cabinets?

Yes, as under-cabinet strips, lit open shelves or glass-front uppers. It needs a power source, a hidden driver that stays reachable for service, and a planned route for the cable. Low-voltage lights are efficient and run cool. We plan the wiring with the cabinet drawings so nothing has to be cut in afterwards.

How does humidity affect custom cabinets in Florida?

Wood swells when humid air reaches unsealed edges, especially if the air conditioning is off for days. Properly built cabinets have all edges sealed and use stable panels. We install only once the house is dry and air-conditioned, and ask you to keep the cooling running. Hardware and doors may need small adjustments through the first season.

Are fluted or textured cabinet doors harder to keep clean?

Slightly, because dust and cooking residue settle in the grooves. A soft brush or a dry microfiber cloth lifts it out, and a damp cloth follows. Painted or sealed fluted doors are as easy as flat ones once you know the routine. We often suggest fluting on uppers and tall panels, away from the splash zone.

What has to be finished before cabinets are delivered?

Drywall, ceiling work, rough electrical and plumbing, and flooring in the cabinet area should be complete, and the air conditioning should be running. Wall paint is usually done too, so the cabinets are not exposed to dust. If the site is not ready, delivery waits, because stored cabinets can warp or be damaged on a busy job.

Everything else in a kitchen is looked at. Cabinetry is handled — opened, leaned on, loaded, closed — thousands of times a year. That is why the parts you never see decide how it ages: the box material, the joinery, the drawer runner, the hinge and the way the whole run is fixed to a wall that is never quite straight.

Questions we are actually asked

The programme is driven by fabrication and, if you are having stone worktops, by the template-to-fit gap that can only start once the cabinetry is installed. We give you a written programme for your specific scope with that gap shown explicitly rather than quoting a general figure, because appliance and stone lead times move with supply.

Semi-custom is manufactured in fixed width increments and adapted to your room with filler panels; custom is built to the exact dimensions of the space. In a newer house with regular geometry semi-custom often fits beautifully and costs less. In an older South Florida house or a condo, where almost nothing is square, custom usually produces a noticeably better fit for the money.

Furniture board is perfectly serviceable in dry locations. Plywood holds screws and hinge plates better and tolerates a leak far better, which is why we recommend it under every sink and dishwasher at minimum. Many clients specify plywood throughout for the humidity tolerance.

If the boxes are structurally sound, the layout still works for you and the carcasses are not water damaged, refacing with new fronts and hardware is a genuine option and costs a fraction of full replacement. We will tell you honestly after a survey whether your boxes are worth keeping.

Cabinetry itself usually does not require a permit. Moving plumbing, adding or altering electrical circuits, new ducted extraction or removing a wall generally do. In a condominium the association's own approval process runs alongside the municipal one and is often the longer of the two.

Cabinetry is adjusted empty and then you load it. Weight settles a run slightly and timber fronts move a little as they acclimatise to the conditioned room. A second adjustment visit after the kitchen has been used is part of how we work rather than a sign that something is wrong.

Salt air is hard on unprotected finishes. Stainless and good quality plated finishes perform well; unlacquered brass and other living finishes will change with handling and coastal air, which some clients want and others do not. It is worth deciding that deliberately rather than discovering it.

Wipe spills promptly, use a damp cloth rather than an abrasive or solvent cleaner, and expect the area immediately around the pulls to show handling first. Keep the finish code from your handover file so touch-ups match, and re-tighten pull fixings about once a year.
