Walk-In Shower Conversion
A walk-in shower conversion replaces a tub — or an outdated stall — with a curbless or low-profile shower built around frameless glass, a linear or center drain, and a floor that’s sloped and waterproofed as its own system. It’s a design-forward project as much as a functional one: the goal is usually an open, spa-like shower that reads as a design feature, not just a fixture swap.
The complicating factor in South Florida is that most homes are built on a concrete slab, and a true zero-threshold (“curbless”) entry generally requires either recessing the slab at the shower location or building a very shallow transition detail — options a framed second-floor bathroom doesn’t have to deal with the same way. Getting this right starts with an honest assessment of what the existing floor structure will actually allow before glass and tile get selected.
Elbaz Construction treats the shower pan as the part of the project that determines everything else — drain placement, slope, and membrane continuity get resolved first, because a beautiful glass enclosure over a poorly waterproofed pan is a leak waiting to happen.

Curbless vs. low-curb, and what the slab allows.
A genuinely curbless entry needs the shower floor to sit flush with the surrounding bathroom floor, which on a slab-on-grade home usually means recessing a section of the slab — real structural work, not just tile work. Where that’s not feasible or budgeted, a low-profile curb (as little as 3/8″–1/2″) with a beveled transition gets most of the barrier-free look and feel without cutting the slab. We walk through both options with actual cost and timeline differences before committing to a design.

Waterproofing the shower pan is its own discipline.
Two systems dominate: a traditional mud-set pan built to slope roughly 1/4 inch per foot to the drain, waterproofed with a sheet membrane (like Schluter-Kerdi) or liquid membrane (like RedGard) over cement backer board; or a prefabricated foam shower base (like Schluter-Kerdi-Board systems) that arrives pre-sloped and pre-waterproofed. Mud-set pans allow custom sizing and tile-in-tile detailing; prefab systems install faster with fewer seams to waterproof correctly.

Drain type changes the whole floor layout.
A center drain forces the floor to slope from all four sides toward one point, which limits where a bench or curb can sit. A linear drain along one wall lets the rest of the floor slope in a single direction, which is both easier to waterproof correctly and opens up more layout flexibility for a bench, niche, or dual-entry design — one reason linear drains have become the default choice on most walk-in conversions we build.

Glass, hardware, and the shower floor tile itself.
Frameless glass (3/8″–1/2″ tempered) reads cleaner than framed enclosures but requires more precise rough-in tolerances. Hardware should be 316 marine-grade stainless rather than standard chrome-plated brass, which corrodes faster under South Florida’s combination of humidity and hard water. Shower floor tile should carry a wet DCOF rating of at least 0.42 under ANSI A137.1, and ideally 0.60 or higher — the threshold recommended for barefoot wet areas like showers — since small-format mosaic tile is often chosen for its grip on sloped pans as much as its look.

What Drives The Cost
- Whether the drain relocates — Keeping the drain in the tub’s existing location avoids slab cutting; moving it adds concrete work and curing time.
- Curbless vs. low-curb — A true zero-threshold entry recessed into the slab costs meaningfully more than a low-profile curb transition.
- Glass configuration — Frameless glass costs more than framed enclosures, and custom angles or returns add further cost.
- Pan construction method — Prefabricated waterproof bases are typically faster/cheaper in labor than a fully custom tiled mud-set pan.
- Tile selection and layout — Mosaic shower floors, accent niches, and full-height wall tile all add labor beyond a simple surround.
- Shower size increase — Expanding the footprint beyond the old tub’s dimensions can require moving a wall or adjusting the vanity layout.

Determine whether the existing floor is slab or framed, and whether a true curbless entry or a low-curb transition is realistic for the space and budget.
Finalize shower footprint, glass configuration, and linear vs. center drain placement based on layout goals.
Pull the plumbing permit required for drain relocation and valve work in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach.
Remove the tub or old stall, relocate the drain and supply lines as needed, and rough-in the new valve.
Build and waterproof the sloped pan, set tile, then install glass and hardware, closing with the final inspection.

Walk-In Shower Conversion Questions, Answered
1 Can I actually get a curbless shower if my house is on a slab?
Yes, but it usually means recessing a section of the slab at the shower location, which is real structural work and adds cost. A low-profile curb (under half an inch) gets a similar look and feel without cutting the slab, and is the more common choice on slab-on-grade conversions.
2 How much bigger should the shower be than my old tub?
Most walk-in conversions land in the 36"x48" to 48"x60" range, larger than a standard 30"x60" tub footprint, though it depends on the room. Bigger isn't always better — a shower sized to the room without crowding the vanity or door swing usually looks and functions better than maximizing square footage.
3 Linear drain or center drain — does it actually matter?
It changes your layout options more than your day-to-day experience. A linear drain lets the floor slope one direction instead of four, which opens up space for a bench or a wider entry and is generally easier to waterproof cleanly.
4 Glass door or an open, curtain-free walk-in?
Frameless glass keeps water contained better and reads more finished, but a fully open (curtain-free) walk-in design works in larger showers where the entry is angled away from the rest of the room. It comes down to room size and layout more than preference.
5 Does a bigger shower need better ventilation than a standard tub/shower combo?
The exhaust requirement itself doesn't change with shower size — Florida's code minimum is 50 CFM regardless — but a larger, more open shower puts more humidity into the room faster, so we often recommend sizing the fan above the code minimum on bigger conversions.
6 How long does a walk-in shower conversion take?
If the drain isn't moving, this can run one to two weeks. If the drain relocates and the slab needs to be cut, add several days for the concrete work and curing time before the pan can be built.
7 Will this pass inspection if I DIY part of it?
The plumbing rough-in (drain and valve relocation) requires a licensed plumber and a permit regardless of who does the tile work. Unpermitted plumbing changes are a common reason inspections fail or resales get flagged later.
8 What's the real cost difference between a prefab base and a fully tiled pan?
A prefabricated waterproof base generally costs less in labor since it arrives pre-sloped, while a custom tiled mud-set pan costs more but allows any size, shape, and tile pattern — including matching the shower floor tile to the walls.
