North Palm Beach was built deliberately, not piecemeal — developer John D. MacArthur began assembling the land in 1954, and the village that followed was laid out around extensively dredged canals designed to put as many homes as possible on the water. Incorporated in 1956, it was later recognized as one of the best-planned communities in the country, and it grew quickly as a bedroom community for engineers and workers at the nearby Pratt & Whitney plant.
