Pembroke Pines was cattle ranch and farmland when it incorporated in 1960, and it stayed a small city for two decades before master-planned communities like SilverLakes, Pembroke Falls, and Chapel Trail turned it into Broward’s second-largest city through the 1980s and ’90s. That growth brought families first and infrastructure second, most notably after Hurricane Andrew in 1992, when the city built its own charter school system rather than wait on the county, now the largest municipally run charter system in Florida.
