Virginia Gardens has one of the more unusual origin stories in Miami-Dade County: in 1947, a group of residents who wanted to keep horses split off from neighboring Miami Springs after it banned them, founding a village of large estate lots that has since given way to a denser mix of single-family homes. With around 2,300 residents, it remains one of the smallest municipalities in the county, sitting directly against Miami International Airport.
