Custom Flooring Design
Some flooring projects aren’t about picking a material and installing it efficiently — they’re about using flooring as an actual design element: a pattern that reads as intentional from across the room, a medallion at an entryway, a deliberate transition between two materials that looks planned rather than patched together.
We take on custom flooring design work across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach for homeowners and businesses who want the floor itself to be part of the design statement, not just a durable surface underfoot — and we plan the fabrication and layout work up front, because custom elements can’t be improvised mid-installation.

Pattern work: herringbone, chevron, and basket weave.
Herringbone and its mitered cousin, chevron, turn a straight run of plank or tile into a directional, high-end visual statement — but both use meaningfully more material than a straight layout because of the angled cuts involved, and both take real additional installation time to align correctly. Basket weave and pinwheel layouts are common in tile entryways and foyers and are frequently paired with a contrasting accent tile set into the joints, adding another layer of visual interest without changing the base material.

Custom terrazzo: medallions, logos, and color blending.
Because poured terrazzo is set using metal divider strips that can be bent into essentially any shape before the terrazzo is poured around them, it’s one of the only flooring systems that can render a genuinely custom medallion, compass rose, monogram, or logo directly into the floor itself — not applied on top, but built into the material. Aggregate color can be custom-blended to match a specific design palette rather than chosen off a standard sample board, a technique with deep roots in Miami’s hotel lobbies and civic buildings that’s increasingly requested for high-end residential entryways and great rooms today.

Mixed-material transitions and inlays.
A deliberate transition between two flooring materials — a wood-look LVP field meeting a herringbone tile inlay at an entry, or a stone border framing a terrazzo field — requires precise layout and a planned transition detail, usually a metal or stone strip, decided before either material is set rather than improvised after the fact. Done well, it reads as an intentional design line drawn through the space; done without planning, it reads as two floors that happen to meet in the same doorway.

Waterjet and precision-cut stone inlay.
Waterjet cutting makes curved or intricate stone and tile inlay work possible — a radius border, a compass medallion, a decorative rug-style inset in the center of a room — that simply can’t be achieved with a standard wet saw. These pieces are typically fabricated off-site to exact measurements before being set into the field flooring, which means the layout and design work has to be finalized and precisely measured well before installation day.

What Drives The Cost
- Complexity of the custom element — A full medallion or logo costs significantly more than a simple accent border.
- Pattern-driven material waste — Herringbone and chevron layouts use more material per square foot than a straight run due to angled cuts.
- Off-site fabrication — Waterjet cutting and custom-bent divider strip work add fabrication cost and lead time beyond standard installation.
- Number of materials being mixed — Projects combining three or more materials require more planning and transition detail than a two-material transition.
- Design and shop-drawing time — Custom work requires design and measurement time before installation even starts, which standard installations don’t need.
- Field size the custom element is set into — A medallion in a small foyer is a smaller undertaking than one integrated into a large great room floor.

Our Process

01. Design Consultation & Concept Development

02. Material & Pattern Selection

03. Shop Drawings / Layout Plan for Custom Elements

04. Fabrication of Custom Components

05. On-Site Installation & Detail Finishing
We talk through the design intent — a pattern, a medallion, a mixed-material transition — and what’s realistically achievable in the space.
Species, tile format, or terrazzo aggregate and color palette are selected to fit the design concept.
Medallions, inlays, and transitions are drawn and measured precisely before fabrication begins.
Waterjet-cut stone, bent divider strips, and pre-cut inlay pieces are fabricated off-site to the shop drawing.
Field flooring and custom components are installed together, with final detail work to blend the transitions seamlessly.

Custom Flooring Design Questions, Answered
1 Can you put a custom design or logo directly into a terrazzo floor?
Yes — terrazzo's metal divider strips can be bent into essentially any shape before the terrazzo is poured, which is how monograms, medallions, compass roses, and logos get built directly into the floor rather than applied on top of it.
2 How much more expensive is herringbone flooring compared to a regular straight layout?
Meaningfully more, on both material and labor — the angled cuts required for herringbone generate more waste than a straight run, and the alignment work takes real additional installation time per square foot.
3 Can you mix two different flooring materials in the same room and have it look intentional?
Yes, but it requires planning the transition detail — usually a metal or stone strip — before either material is set, along with precise layout work. Without that planning up front, a material transition tends to look like an afterthought rather than a design choice.
4 What's a waterjet-cut stone inlay and is it worth the cost?
It's precision-cut stone or tile, fabricated off-site with a high-pressure water jet, that allows curved and intricate shapes a standard wet saw can't produce — a radius border or a medallion inset, for example. Whether it's worth it comes down to how much that specific design element matters to you, since it's a genuine cost add over standard straight-cut material.
5 Can you match a custom terrazzo color blend to my home's design palette?
Yes — aggregate color and size can be custom-blended for new terrazzo work rather than chosen from a standard sample selection, which is how we match a new terrazzo installation to a specific design scheme or an existing original floor.
6 Is a chevron pattern different from herringbone, or are they the same thing?
They're related but distinct — herringbone uses rectangular planks set at an angle so the ends form a zigzag, while chevron uses planks pre-cut at an angle so they meet in a continuous point, creating a cleaner, more uniform V pattern. Chevron generally requires more precise, pre-mitered material.
7 Can you do a medallion or compass design at my entryway?
Yes — this is one of the more common custom requests, whether in terrazzo, waterjet-cut stone, or tile, and it's planned and often fabricated (in the case of stone) before installation, then set into the field flooring at the entry as a focal point.
8 How far in advance do custom flooring elements need to be planned or ordered?
Earlier than standard material — waterjet-cut stone and custom terrazzo divider strip work both require shop drawings and off-site fabrication time before installation can even begin, so custom elements should be finalized well ahead of the rest of the project's material orders.
