Fort Lauderdale earned its ‘Venice of America’ nickname from the finger-island canal system dug starting in 1920, and neighborhoods like Rio Vista and Colee Hammock still carry that era’s character, from 1920s waterfront lots with private docks to shade-tree streets lined with 1930s Colonial Revival homes.
