Primary/Master Bath Suite Remodel
A primary suite remodel is defined by scale and by who’s using the room: usually the largest bathroom in the house, built for two people at once, and often connected directly to the primary bedroom and closet. That changes the design math from a single-user hall bath into something closer to a small, coordinated multi-zone space — vanity zone, wet zone, and often a separated water closet.
Because a primary suite frequently borders the primary closet, a lot of these remodels turn into a two-room project even when only the bathroom was the original ask — moving a shower wall a few feet can change closet layout on the other side of it. That interconnection is worth planning for at the outset rather than discovering mid-project.
Elbaz Construction scopes primary suite remodels around how the room will actually be used by two people simultaneously getting ready — which is a different design problem than a guest bath, even when the finish budget is similar.

Designing for two people at once.
Dual vanities need enough center-to-center spacing that two people can use them without bumping elbows — most primary suites target at least 30″ of counter width per person plus separation between bowls. Beyond the vanity, thinking in zones (wet area, vanity area, and toilet area) rather than one open room lets both people use the space at the same time without crossing paths.

The separated water closet question.
A fully enclosed toilet room adds privacy and is common in larger primary suites, but it still has to meet the same Florida code minimums as any other bathroom — at least 15 inches from the toilet’s center to any side wall or fixture, and 21 inches of clear space in front of it. Adding the room usually means adding its own door, and often its own light and exhaust routing, which is worth budgeting as its own line item rather than assuming it’s included in the general remodel cost.

Where the closet and bathroom meet.
A large share of primary suite remodels expand into the adjacent closet, or at minimum need the two spaces designed together, since moving a shower or vanity wall a few feet can reclaim (or eat into) closet square footage. Coordinating both rooms in one design phase avoids the common outcome of a beautifully remodeled bathroom that leaves the closet layout awkward.

Layout changes run into slab reality.
Wanting to move the shower to catch better natural light, or relocate the tub to a different wall, is common in primary suite remodels — but on South Florida’s slab-on-grade homes, that means cutting concrete to move the drain, not just reframing a wall. We flag which layout wishes require slab work during design, before a homeowner falls in love with a configuration that adds meaningful cost.

What Drives The Cost
- Overall size — More square footage means more tile, cabinetry, and fixtures across the board.
- Layout/plumbing relocation — Moving the shower or tub to a new wall requires slab cutting on most South Florida homes.
- Dual vanity plumbing — Two full sets of supply and drain lines cost more than a single-vanity layout, especially if the sinks sit on opposite walls.
- Fixture count — A separate soaking tub plus shower plus dual vanity plus enclosed water closet adds plumbing and electrical scope beyond a simpler layout.
- Tile square footage — Larger rooms and full-height wall tile both scale cost with area.
- Closet integration — If the project expands into the adjacent closet, that’s additional square footage, cabinetry, and often electrical scope.

Evaluate the bathroom and adjacent closet together if the scope may cross into both rooms.
Determine which desired changes require moving drain lines (and therefore cutting the slab) versus what can be done within existing plumbing.
Pull building, plumbing, and electrical permits based on final scope.
Open walls and, where needed, cut and repour slab sections for relocated fixtures; complete plumbing and electrical rough-in.
Install cabinetry, tile, fixtures, and closet integration (if applicable), then pass final inspection.

Primary/Master Bath Suite Remodel Questions, Answered
1 Is it worth combining a bathroom and closet remodel into one project?
If the two rooms share a wall that might move, yes — designing them together avoids a scenario where the finished bathroom leaves the closet layout compromised, and it's typically more efficient than two separate projects months apart.
2 How big should a primary suite bathroom actually be?
There's no strict minimum beyond standard fixture clearances, but most primary suites that feel comfortable for two people run 100+ square feet, with dual vanities, a separate shower, and often a soaking tub or separated water closet.
3 Can we add a second sink without a major project?
It depends on where the existing plumbing runs. Adding a second bowl next to the existing vanity plumbing is straightforward; putting the second sink on an opposite wall means new supply and drain lines, which is a bigger scope.
4 Do we need a separate, fully enclosed toilet room?
It's a preference, not a requirement — plenty of well-designed primary suites keep the toilet in the open room, often with a partial wall for visual privacy instead of a full enclosed room with its own door.
5 How long does a primary suite remodel take compared to a hall bath?
Longer, mainly due to size and complexity — where a hall bath might run four to six weeks, a full primary suite remodel with layout changes often runs six to ten weeks, more if it extends into the closet.
6 Why does a primary suite cost more than a similarly finished hall bath?
Scale (more tile, more cabinetry, more fixtures) and complexity (dual plumbing runs, possibly a separated water closet) both add cost beyond what the size difference alone would suggest.
7 Can we keep the tub/shower in its current location to save money?
Yes — keeping fixtures on their existing plumbing walls avoids slab cutting entirely, which is one of the more effective ways to control cost on a primary suite remodel without compromising the finish quality.
8 What's the most common regret homeowners have after a primary suite remodel?
Not planning storage (linen, towels, toiletries) as its own design category — it tends to get treated as an afterthought once the vanity and shower are decided, then feels tight once the room is finished.
