Two man-made islands built out of mangrove swampland in the late 1940s make up Bay Harbor Islands, incorporated in 1947 with a deliberate split in mind: West Island for single-family homes, East Island for multi-family buildings. East Island in particular holds one of the largest concentrations of Miami Modern (MiMo) architecture anywhere, including buildings tied to architects like Morris Lapidus, which means renovation work there often has to balance mid-century character with modern hurricane and building-code requirements.
