Oakland Park was platted in 1922 around the oaks lining the Middle River and incorporated by 1929, and Dixie Highway has been its commercial spine ever since — these days lined with the breweries, antique shops, and independent restaurants of the city’s Culinary Arts District. The homes nearby are largely older, small-footprint properties from the mid-20th century, built well before open-concept living and modern insulation standards were the norm.
